I grew up on Long Island Sound in Connecticut.
Since I was old enough to ride a bike, I’ve been fishing the honey holes and near shore waters for blues, stripers, weakfish, tautog, fluke, flounder and bonita. I knew I wanted to be a professional guide when I caught a 45lb striped bass. It took me more than an hour to get it to shore and when I finally made it home, I noticed it was so large that the head and tail were curled up on the ends of the tub. I was hooked!
I received a degree in Marketing, Management and Communications from Ithaca College, where I spent most of my time fishing, snorkeling, biking, and camping along the Finger Lakes and the rivers that filled them. After graduation, I started work in Manhattan and although my head and body were in sales, my HEART was always into fishing. After three years in Manhattan, I realized that top sales, #1 finishes and the rat race of the Northeast was not what I really wanted. So I looked at a map of the U.S. with my soon-to-be wife - she wanted to head back down south where there were short winters and I wanted to be in a town on the water. As we looked, I noticed a large gap of water between St. Petersburg and Anna Maria Island and thought, "there must be a huge amount of water passing through there on an outgoing tide."
Little did I know that this was the start of a new life in sunny Tampa, Florida. I started fishing in a custom fishing kayak around the shallow points of Tampa Bay in 1998. Sitting in a kayak all that time taught me that I needed a new way to fish. I saved some money and bought a 17-foot Mako with a 130 hp saltwater series on the transom and a Great White trolling motor custom mounted on the front. A whole new world opened up. I fished every day after work for four years and found a whole lot of the honey holes in Tampa Bay. I fished all over Florida for Snook, Spotted Sea Trout, Tarpon, Redfish, Flounder, Jack Crevalle, Permit, Pompano, Barracuda, Sailfish, Sharks, Sheep Head, Mackerel and the list goes on.
When I decided to take my love of fishing from a past time to full time, I began searching for the boat that would suit my needs. I researched other boat companies but none offered 26.7 feet of open fishing space, 9 feet of beam, wide and high gunnels, custom 14 foot tower and dry ride that the custom Gause Built Boat offered for the flats and bay. Versatility and safety at its finest! With one son and the expectation of having another child, my wife said yes to a boat that would be great for all ages and professional fishing. Nothing ever sounded better!!!
